Cultural Considerations in Custody Litigation in Our Diverse Community Published in Family Law Review

Debbie’s article, Cultural Considerations in Custody Litigation in Our Diverse Community Cases, was published in the Georgia Bar Association Spring 2019 Family Law Review. Debbie authored the article to accompany her presentation at the 4th Annual Not Your Everyday Custody Case: Advanced Issues Facing Custody Litigators and Guardians ad Litem continuing legal education seminar on October 11, 2018, with over 100 attendees.

The article discusses culture’s role in custody and visitation cases; obstacles faced by litigants of various  cultures in family courts; and avoiding pre-conceived and often unintentional cultural stereotypes, misunderstandings and biases that interfere with fairly applying the best interests of the children standard. Most helpful, the article also includes practical tips for litigators and Guardians ad Litem involved in bi- or multi-cultural custody and visitation cases.
